Material: terracotta • 6.0kg • Volume: ca. 4.09L (1.47 kg/L)
Left half of lion head from upper teeth to top of plaque. Left side chiseled, consistent with accommodating the taller Type 2A/B antefixes. Breaks reveal fine-coarse clay layering. Well-preserved paint over most of piece, critical for reconstruction of all lion coloring. Eyes white with large black iris surrounded by black outline. Edges of eye surrounded by black lines with white outside. Side of forehead over eye red with black and white borders. Center of forehead perhaps tan with black outline connecting to a round, black-outlined knob representing knitted brow. Cheek folds outlined in black, the upper painted white, the lower, with a red teardrop. Five snout folds painted, from top to bottom, white-black-white-red-white with black outlines. Muzzle folds replicate the color pattern. Snout badly abraded but faint traces of black along perimeter. Cheeks red with black border along ruff, mouth, and cheek and muzzle folds. Lips white with traces of red on interior. Ruff white largely concealed by tan accretions. Ears and side mane accented with black over white background; painted curls of mane do not coincide with the molded curls near the ears. Mane above forehead abraded. Traces of white on plaque. No traces of paint on interior.
