Quills & Feathers: Literary Birds of the Northern Great Plains includes both Native luminaries such as Black Elk and Standing Bear, and, of course, Euro-American figures from 19th-century pioneer literature, through George A. Custer, Willa Cather, and other canonical Plains writers, to the recent Poet Laureate of the United States Ted Kooser. In line with interdisciplinarity, the writing of the naturalists of this region — e.g. John Janvocy and Paul Johnsgaard — are included.
